Haden Hotel & Casino is now the sole owner of the two lesser-played but vital holes on the course, it was revealed in a Federal Communications Commission filing released Wednesday.
The company purchased the 17th hole for $8 million in 2015, though no change in ownership was made at the time, and the company purchased the 18th for $5.2 million in 2016, according to the filing.
Those transactions, and others, have now all come to fruition.
Haden’s current Augusta chairman, Dave Benton, said the company used the money to help fund its expansion throughout the South and Northeast.
“We made a deal with the landlord and those funds were used for facility enhancements and to enhance the resort that we have,” Benton told ESPN in April.
Haden purchased the land in 2014 for $5 million, though the company’s website no longer lists the property as available.
Benton said he is looking forward to the next 12 months.
“The property will be getting ready to go to remodel,” he said, though Benton wouldn’t specify the types of improvements that will be made to the 18th and 17th holes.
Two new holes will be added to the course starting in 2019, and Benton said the company is looking forward to being involved in the design process for those holes as well.
“They are two outstanding holes,” Benton said. “They will be a true test of golf, and anybody who plays those holes is going to be proud of their game and what they have done.”
One important factor to consider: both the 17th and 18th holes could be significantly altered by the new design.
As a sign of how important those two holes have become to the golfing world, hundreds of fans and players from around the world were in a holding pattern there in April when play was halted for Donald Trump’s presidential inauguration.
Benton said the 18th hole was built specifically for a presidential visit.
“We did it in a way that made it a national stage when President Trump came to play golf,” Benton said. “A lot of people would have been wondering, ‘Well, why should we
