In a LINQ query, why does the following return an empty dictionary?

I’m writing an extension method for dictionary types which allows me to receive an empty dictionary from anywhere in the code and know that it’s an empty dictionary and no operation will be performed on it.
public static void Clear(this Dictionary d, string propertyName)
{
if (d.Count == 0)
throw new ArgumentException(“The dictionary is empty.”);

d[propertyName] = “”;
d.Clear();
}

I’ve run into a weird situation where the following code:
dictionary.Clear(“key”);

throws the ArgumentException, when d is an empty dictionary. If I change d to a Dictionary to prevent the exception, then it returns an empty dictionary. What am I doing wrong?

The problem is the type of the parameter.
Here:
public static void Clear(this Dictionary d, string propertyName)

You’re telling the compiler to expect this method to be called like:
dictionary.Clear(TKey, string);

Which is a nonsense. This argument type should be:
public static void Clear(this Dictionary d,
string propertyName)

So the method declaration would look like this:
public static void Clear(this Dictionary d,
string propertyName)

That is, do not use a type parameter in the name of the second argument.
Another option is to change the method to be generic on the second argument, and not on the type parameter, if at all possible, to
