EFI consists of the Extensible Firmware Interface (EFI) and a set of runtime services that run in System Management Mode (SMM). EFI primarily helps to provide a robust, bootable operating system because it takes care of certain OS services in hardware; all the user needs to do is supply the rest of the software and then jump into the operating system it came with. Although EFI is the fundamental new technology behind the Intel Core processor family, it is possible to load EFI directly from the CPU’s RAM. This technology is called ARM Boot, and it provides a simple way to utilize EFI’s OS service to boot Linux and other operating systems. No new hardware is needed support this way of loading an operating system. It is possible to use the ARM Boot technology to start a normal self-contained Linux system via an on-chip interface (EC), which boots, but is limited in configuring the rest of the system. No additional hardware is required, and the instructions provide a direct implementation method allowing the ARM controller to do its own work.
